Ever wanted to see a true sequel to the Korean classic My Sassy Girl?
Now we finally got one… for better or worse. Enter the 2016 follow up My New Sassy Girl (we call it The New My Sassy Girl in the video review).
So how is the follow up movie to perhaps the most iconic Korean romantic comedy of all time? To answer this, we must first talk about our expectations coming into the film.
And honestly, they weren’t too high.
When I prepared myself to watch the 2016 sequel, I didn’t have expectations that it would match the Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun classic. With a new director taking over the series, Jo Geun-sik, and a new sassy girl, K-pop singer Victoria from f(x), it would be a near impossible task to match the original.
After all, the chemistry between Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun was so good.
In fact, if My New Sassy Girl was even 50% as good as the original, I would have been more than happy.
So with that being said, does the movie meet these steep expectations and surprise me?
Let’s find out. In our 13 minute in-depth video review of The New My Sassy Girl, you’ll learn…
- How Victoria did as the new sassy girl
- How the chemistry between Cha Tae-hyun and Victoria is
- What the sequel is missing that the original had
- How Japanese actress Fujii Mina did in the film
- Why many Chinese people will probably like the film
- The connection between My Sassy Girl 1 and The New My Sassy Girl
- … and of course, my final rating on the film
Ironically, as the sequel to the 2001 classic, this movie was severely underhyped. Perhaps, many Koreans thought this film would tank and be horrible.
What’s your take on My New Sassy Girl?
